What Is the Cabo Mexico Airport?
There is only one commercial airport serving the Los Cabos region: Los Cabos International Airport, IATA code SJD. People call it the Cabo airport, the Cabo San Lucas airport and the San José del Cabo airport more or less interchangeably, but they all mean the same place. It sits just north of San José del Cabo, at the eastern end of the region, and it is the arrival point for essentially every visitor and owner flying in.
There is no second commercial airport. Todos Santos does not have one, Cabo San Lucas does not have one, and neither does Rolling Hills. The small Cabo San Lucas airstrip (CSL) handles private and charter aviation only.
Distance From the Airport to Rolling Hills
Rolling Hills sits at the opposite end of the region from the airport, so this is a longer run than the Corridor communities make. The arithmetic:
- SJD to Cabo San Lucas: about 45 km (28 miles) on Highway 1, typically 40–50 minutes.
- Cabo San Lucas to Rolling Hills: about 11 km northwest on Highway 19, the Todos Santos highway — roughly 10 minutes.
- Total, airport to the Rolling Hills gate: about 56 km (35 miles) and, realistically, 55 to 70 minutes door to door.
Treat an hour as the planning number and add fifteen or twenty minutes if you land between three and six in the afternoon, when Highway 1 through the Corridor slows. Christmas and Semana Santa add more.
Why Airport Access Matters for Rolling Hills Owners
Worth being straight about this, because it is the one practical trade-off of the Pacific side over the Corridor. You are an hour from the gate rather than half an hour. If you fly in and out constantly, that difference is real and you should weigh it.
What you get in exchange is what the Corridor cannot sell you: large lots, a low HOA, a gate with security around the clock, and a Pacific horizon with nothing between you and it. Owners here tend to decide that an extra twenty-five minutes a few times a year is a fair price. Day to day what matters more is that Cabo San Lucas — groceries, pharmacies, hospitals, the marina, restaurants — is ten minutes away, closer than much of the Corridor manages.
Getting From the Airport to Rolling Hills
Rental car
The option most owners take, and the one we recommend if you are coming to look at property. Rolling Hills is not a walkable community and there is no useful public transport out this way, so you will want a vehicle regardless. All the major agencies operate at SJD. Decline the roadside offers inside the terminal and go to your booked counter.
Private transfer
Pre-booked, fixed price, someone waiting with your name. For a group or a late arrival this is the least friction, and it is what most people do on a first visit. Confirm the driver knows Rolling Hills specifically — it is off Highway 19 past Cabo San Lucas, not on the Corridor, and an unfamiliar driver will default to the wrong end of town.
Taxi
Available, more expensive than a pre-booked transfer over this distance, and worth agreeing the fare before you get in.
Shared shuttles
They serve the Corridor hotels well and Rolling Hills poorly. With over an hour and several hotel stops ahead of you, this is the one to skip.
Airlines Flying Into Los Cabos
SJD has broad non-stop service from the United States, Canada and within Mexico, including American, United, Delta, Alaska, Southwest, JetBlue, WestJet, Air Canada, Aeroméxico and Volaris. Winter is the peak and the schedule thickens accordingly; summer thins out. Routes change season to season, so check current schedules rather than taking any list as permanent.
FAQs About the Cabo Airport and Rolling Hills
Is the Cabo Mexico Airport the same as Los Cabos International Airport?
Yes. SJD is the only commercial airport in the region and it goes by all of those names.
How far is the airport from Rolling Hills?
About 56 km (35 miles). Plan on an hour, or a little more in afternoon traffic.
Does Rolling Hills have its own airport?
No. The nearest commercial airport is SJD. The Cabo San Lucas airstrip (CSL), about fifteen minutes away, handles private and charter flights only.
What is the best way to get from the airport to Rolling Hills?
A rental car if you are staying more than a couple of days or looking at property; a pre-booked private transfer if you would rather not drive after a flight.
Are there direct international flights to Los Cabos?
Yes, from many US and Canadian cities, with the widest choice between November and April.
Can I rent a car at the airport?
Yes, all the major agencies are on site. Book ahead in high season and budget for the mandatory Mexican liability insurance, which is not optional and is not covered by most credit cards.
Final Thoughts
Rolling Hills is an hour from the plane and ten minutes from town. That is the shape of living on the Pacific side: slightly further from the airport, noticeably closer to everything you actually use during the week, and a long way from anyone building in front of your view.
